PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Insititute for Information Management in Mechanical Engineering of the RWTH Aachen University in Germany would like to participate in the Horizon-2020-FoF-2015 Call and is looking for both industrial and academic partners to build up a consortium. The aims of our proposed project are to create a holisitic platform for production planning and optimisation. Our consistent factory information model will ensure interoperability between all layers of factory automation based on light-weight web application solutions. We would to be able to draw a picture of the Factories of the Future including the interconnection of production facilities and the embedding workers and maintenance suppliers for a better life-work balance.

Proposal Outline:

One major goal of today’s manufacturing research activities is to enable Factories of the Future. Hereby, the definition and expectations regarding the Factory of the Future differ widely. In terms of our understanding, autonomous changeability is a central characteristic of these factories, because it facilitates the manufacturing of highly customized and customer-related products even for small lot sizes. The Factory of the Future is reconfigurable concerning its processes, but is also flexible in terms of communication processes and its information and communication infrastructure.

One central, but still unresolved problem, to realize Factories of the Future is to establish production services on all levels of the company. This requires harmonizing of information models and an integrated information management that interconnects the different levels of the enterprise. A distributed service platform manages and provides these services. Further, it analyzes the different tasks and obligations and distributes the work to the matching and useable services. Managers and machine workers are accessing the same information system and receive customized information. In this way, planning, optimization, production and product development are melting into one overall process. Urgent product requests and special customer demands as well as maintenance services can be carried out in a continuous way, real-time data can influence current production processes, help optimizing short-term planning and also flows back into global ERP systems. The interconnection of all these systems and subsystems through a generic information model opens up a completely new world of applications to make the Factory of the Future become true.

Production facilities, sensors and even products can be equipped with computer chips and wireless communication capabilities, enabling the Internet of Things for production and Cyber Physical Production Systems (CPPS). By making use of a generic information model, all devices can embed themselves ad-hoc into the production network using self-annotation and registration approaches. A web server manages all devices, recognizes their functionalities and can accordingly feed the different actors of the production environment with customized information.

Our aim is to combine the concepts of CPPS with general planning and optimization approaches of manufacturing processes. In this context, we concentrate on increasing productivity during design and ramp-up phases as well as enhancing tool interoperability and information integration for decision support purposes.

Our recent research is the creation of a platform that is capable of addressing multiple application domains of various production systems into one consistent information model. The according platform is specialized on production processes and can be enhanced by ontologies of various domains. In order to map the entire manufacturing process onto a consistent server platform, the information model intends to be capable of the

  • Enrichment of sensor data and production information with annotations that are based on information models of the according application domain
  • Classification of the information suitable for the different levels of an enterprise
  • Information integration into suitable data storages

Premised on the described information model, the platform is realized through an integrated information management system that aims for

  • Scalability using a concept that is based on (web) services
  • Miscellaneous user interfaces such as mobile devices
  • Emergency functions for the production environment
  • Mapping of complete process chains from the management to the shop-floor levels
  • Fast “on-the-fly” planning through real-time availability of the information at any place

Based on this platform out goal for the Horizon 2020- Factories of the Future Call 2015 is to provide a holisitic framework for the creation and the managing of production processes together with our partners.
