PROJECT OVERVIEW
The aim of the proposal is to provide SMEs with a low-cost tool offered on a web platform that will help them route their fleets in the environmentally friendliest and most economical way and provide them with dynamic re-routing options based on real-time traffic information. There is currently a clearly identified gap on the integration of traffic information systems with routing optimisation software. We propose a dynamic routing system oriented towards the SMEs active in the areas of transport, distribution, logistics, waste collection, emergency services, delivery of goods, etc that manage fleets of vehicles and where optimal routing is essential for both financial, operational and environmental reasons. The system will integrate real-time information on user contributed traffic conditions. The end users will silently report data through their connected devices on travel and “stop & go” times per network segment. Users will also have the possibility to deliberately report accidents, manifestations, constructions, works etc. Traffic information from national infrastructures and authorities will also be considered. Traffic information collected at the central hub will be processed, analysed and used for providing re-routing choices for each vehicle. The assignment of visiting points to vehicles, the sequence of visiting points as well as the visting time per point will be re-calculated based on the traffic conditions and other problem-specific requirements. Several optimisation criteria will be considered for determining optimal or near-optimal routes. An innovation in this project will be the inclusion of environmental criteria on determining optimal routes. Instead of minimising total distance travelled by each vehicle, the total fuel consumption will drive the routing decisions. Fuel consumption does not simply depend on distance, but also on load and congestion. The outcome of the project will be a multi-disciplinary approach in providing a holistic SME-oriented solution in managing economically and environmentally friendly their vehicle of fleets.
