The Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology (IPiN) is a leading scientific centre in Poland, specializing in working out new methods for the treatment and rehabilitation of mental and neurological disorders. The Institute has modern, highly specialized diagnostic facilities for research on causes of the central nervous system diseases (genetic, neurophysiologic, psychological, socio-cultural). Also social aspects of mental health are studied, and historical and epidemiological data related to psychiatry and neurology are collected and disseminated.

The Institute actively participates in shaping of Poland’s health policy as related to psychiatry and neurology, and is involved in mental health promotion and education. Possessing considerable clinical resources (hospital and outpatient, i.e. 7 psychiatric clinics, including clinics of forensic psychiatry, psychiatric rehabilitation and child and adolescent psychiatry, 4 neurological clinics, including neurosurgery clinic), the Institute is ready for cooperation in various forms of partnership and consortium.

The Institute is interested in research and development cooperation related to various aspects and levels of analysis of its priority theme, i.e. “Restorative therapies for patients after brain injury with various aetiology”, both in clinical studies with human patients as participants and pre-clinical testing of animal models:

• Neurophysiologic aspect – therapeutic interventions with brain activity electro-stimulation including rTMS, tDCS and deep brain stimulation, peripheral sensory-motor stimulation etc.
• Pharmacological aspect – among others, thrombolysis in ischemic stroke, antidepressants after stoke, minimalization of brain injury effects – curing of pain, sleep disturbance, spasticity, depression and other psychiatric symptoms.
• Surgery aspect and mechanical intravenous interventions – therapeutic stimulation of deep brain structures, invasive hyposclerar stimulation of brain cortex, etc.
• Genetic aspect.
• Neurobiological aspect – therapies supporting neurogenesis, synaptogenesis, dendritic sprouting in models of epilepsy, anxiety disorders (PTSD) and drug addiction.
• Behavioural aspect – therapeutic modulation of behaviour by specific training of disturbed motor and cognitive-behavioural functions: physiotherapeutic and various psychological trainings, speech therapy, psychotherapy, socio-therapy, bio-feedback, etc.
• Neuropathology aspect – brain tissue samples useful in studies on pathogenesis of neurodegenerative, vascular, inflammatory, prion and neoplastic diseases, and developmental disturbances, etc.
• Neuroradiology aspect – monitoring of therapy effectiveness including neuroimaging, tensor of brain and spinal core diffusion, spectroscopy of demyelisation and tumours, and others.
• Public health aspect including mental health promotion.

The IPiN would like to join consortiums developing proposals on several HORIZON 2020 topics:

• PHC-2-2015: Understanding disease: systems medicine
• PHC-3-2015: Understanding common mechanisms of diseases and their relevance in co-morbidities
• PHC-14-2015: New therapies for rare diseases
• PHC-18-2015: Establishing effectiveness of health care interventions in the paediatric population
• PHC-22-2015: Promoting mental wellbeing in the ageing population.
